Pennsylvania

In 1681, King Charles II of England granted William Penn a section of land west of the Delaware River. Penn called this forested land Sylvania (Latin for “woods”). As a tribute to William Penn’s father, King Charles himself tacked on the prefix, making it Pennsylvania. One of the original Thirteen Colonies, Pennsylvania is known as the Keystone State because of its important role in forming the country. The Declaration of Independence was signed and the United States Constitution adopted in Philadelphia. Pennsylvania has contributed much to how Americans eat. Hershey and Heinz are headquartered in Pennsylvania and familiar throughout the country and much of the world. Pennsylvania is a major manufacturer of potato chips, pretzels, and other snacks. In Philadelphia, Italian immigrants created the Philly cheese steak and pepper pot, while Pennsylvania Dutch developed warm comfort foods like chicken pot pie and regional wonders like sticky buns, scrapple, shoofly pie, and the soft pretzel. The first commercial mushrooms were grown near Philadelphia in the late 19th century. Pennsylvania remains a major mushroom producer.

About me:
I am a working mom. Although I love to cook, I have very little time to do so, and my husband and son are picky, which severely limits what recipes I can try.

Mom's Warm Milk

Very delicious! I used cinnamon instead of nutmeg just because I'm a cinnamon girl. This is definitely something I'll be making a lot this upcoming fall & winter season.

Seven-Layer Gelatin Salad

Reviewed on Oct. 12, 2008 by lovestohost
I wanted to love this as much as 7 year old me once did...apparently, my tastes have evolved. Didn't *love* the taste and it was VERY time consuming! Doesn't take a ton of hands on time, but make sure you have at least 4 hours available if you plan to make this. Apparently, there's also a big diff between *firm* and *set*, too (and I don't know what it is...I allowed all the layers to set for about the same time, but I had some that didn't meld so the layers SLID OFF at service). This def looks cool and is a great convo piece, but I'd rec making in ind servings for serving ease. I made mine w/a variety of Jello flavors (some sugar free) in red, orange, yellow, green, and blue.

Crispy Orange Beef

Reviewed on Oct. 12, 2008 by Rebecca Paxton
Turned out fantastic. I did as others suggested and doubled the sauce while cutting the sugar in half. I also omitted the orange peel as it really didn't need it. Next time I will reduce the vinegar by 25% and use mixed OJ instead. Really very good. I will make again.
