Ham biscuits are the signature dish, but there is so much more to savor in this revitalizing city on the James River. The cuisine of Richmond is heavily influenced by it’s southern history, but also by it’s proximity to the Chesapeake and Atlantic. These days you are as likely to find crab cakes on the menu as you are hush puppies. The long summers mean cookouts are common for 7 months out of the year. Any block party in Richmond is incomplete without deviled eggs, ice tea, and hot dogs. Of course it’s also not uncommon to see a bucket of oysters on the patio fresh and ready to be shucked and slurped right out of the shell. Downtown’s Shockoe Slip and Fan neighborhoods are dotted with bistros that serve everything from trendy creations worthy of any of the bigger metropolises to the north to comfortable home cooked fare perfect for a lazy afternoon or evening. Of course there is also the aforementioned ham biscuits, be sure not to leave town without trying them.

About me:
I am married and have two daughters and a dog (my third child. I enjoy spending time with my family. I love to get in the kitchen and really cook on the weekends, since the weekdays just go by so fast! I love cooking with my oldest daughter, she's 3, b/c she's so interested about what I am doing! It has also helped her to be more adventurous with what she'll eat, and it gives us a chance to spend time together. I am looking forward to when my youngest daughter can participate as well.

Grandma's Corn Pudding

Reviewed on Sep. 2, 2008 by NONA
Definitely the old fashioned country recipe for corn pudding. I substituted Splenda for the sugar, and I did add a teaspoon of vanilla and a sprinkle of cinnamon on top. All of my friends at the holiday cookout raved about the recipe, and I've had four or five recipe requests already.

Barbeque Sauce II

Reviewed on Sep. 2, 2008 by NONA
Excellent recipe! I used this recipe the first time about a month ago on some pork ribs and was really impressed. Friday morning prior to Labor Day this year, I did my usual dry rub on an 8 lb pork shoulder; Sunday night before Labor Day, the shoulder when on the grill at 215 degrees for a very relaxing 13 hours. Ten minutes of rest after coming off the grill, then the pulling began -- with intermittent doses of sauce. The pork & sauce got rave reviews at our neighborhood cookout, and now my son is anxious to introduce the sauce & pulled pork to Texas !

Grandma Johnson's Scones

So delicious and easy. I added dried cranberries and orange zest instead of raisins. They were wonderful with orange marmalade, and Easy Devonshire Cream. (from this site)
