San Diego, California

Sitting in the southwest corner of the state, San Diego is where California began, originally claimed in the name of Spain by Portuguese explorer Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo. With an average annual temperature of just over 70 degrees, everyday is a good day for a trip to the beach or a farmer’s market. The beaches are everywhere and you are likely to find a market somewhere just about any day of the week—and year-round, no less. The city’s restaurants offer everything from casual takeout to four-star dining, with the fish taco as the local favorite. You haven’t truly experienced eating in San Diego if you haven’t enjoyed one of their deep fried, battered fish wrapped in a corn tortilla with cabbage and sauce.

About me:
I was born in Northeastern Pennsylvania, and raised in a Mexican neighborhood in Southern California. I always joke that my grandmother began teaching me recipes in utero since all of my first memories with her involve cooking. I've since lived in several places (e.g., Washington, D.C., Japan) and have learned that there are few better ways to communicate culture and emotion than with food.

Jumbo Shrimp and Asparagus

This was just ok. I added 4 cloves of garlic and it still needed something. It tasted too bland.

Whipped Cream

Reviewed on Jul. 18, 2008 by Violet
Delicious and very easy to make! Way better than the ready made kind. Be sure to use a metal bowl and place in the freezer for ten minutes before making the whipped cream. I can't wait to experiment with different flavor extracts and different amounts of sugar.
